The Winter Soldier

Born March 10th, 1917, Bucky Barnes was best friends with Steve Rogers. He’d been a guardian and protector of his best friend given his inability to protect himself given his size. His soft spot for his best friend led to him protecting him and taking him under his wing. At least of course, until the attack on Pearl Harbor.The attack gave both James and Steve a desire to join in the fight, which it was much easier for James to enlist given his build and stature and lack of health issues to hold him back.In 1943, he was assigned to the 107th. His unit was captured by Hydra, and he was injected with the Super Soldier Serum by Arnim Zola. Fortunately, he was saved by Steve and they’d go back to fight Red Skull’s forces. Unfortunately, he gets caught up in everything and ends up falling some distance. No body is found.It happens, due to the serum he’d been dosed with, he survives the fall and only loses his left arm. Eventually he’s captured by HYDRA and the Soviet Armed Forces. They proceed to brainwash him and give him a cybernetic arm fitted with the image of the Star (USSR). He’s the first and only successful Winter Soldier.Over the next half a century, between bouts of cryogenic stasis, he is sent off on missions to rid the world of people who stand against HYDRA. Notable targets include JFK, Howard Stark, and Maria (Howard’s wife.). During some time out, he was granted permission to train in the Red Room along side the other widows, and Natasha and Yelena, whom he respected greatly and held deep affection for the pair. He wasn’t much for romantic entanglement due to the torture, but if he had… They’d both would have been who he’d have been interested in at the time. (And the future. Happily.)In 2014, Winter Soldier was ordered to off Nick Fury to ensure the success of Project insight. But this is where we fall from canon. And a bit more, but… Yes.

He is still challenged by Steve, but he doesn’t start to remember then.He goes back, lies about his success and is found out. He fights his way through the people after him and he’s still framed for the incident at Vienna International Center, and consequently the death of T’Chaka. Black Panther still wants revenge and the Avenger’s Civil War still occurs but he has no idea what’s going on. He just knows his only job is to survive and somehow there’s people on his side.It comes out he was framed, but instead of taking the offer from T’Challa right away, he goes off and escapes to Russia where he goes into hiding for a long while. Somewhere throughout his entire time there, he’d picked up a strong Russian accent, and his grip on the language would make it seem as if he’d been fluent in the language his entire life.Eventually, he does seek out T’Challa to help him release his brainwashing, but he still isn’t the Bucky everyone expected him to be. Far more morally gray with a strong distaste for his best friend and the past life. He’d felt abandoned, betrayed. Forgotten. He still struggles with it, and has a hard time trusting.Must Knows about Bucky in this AU:-Bucky is still a gentleman, and would never mistreat a woman. In fact, unless sparring, he’d rather never fight a woman if he can manage it. This is in part due to the way he was raised prior to his training.
-He doesn’t always connect himself to Bucky. The things he’s done, the stuff he’s caused, it haunts him. Many a sleepless nights and nightmares plague him.
-He has a hard time trusting the Avengers due to the trouble with the Civil War
-He still hears the code words in his head, and his dreams. Often responding with his return code.
-Once he lets you in, he has a hard time letting you go. He’s really, truly soft once you break through that shell and he’d die for you if he had to.
-Much like Natasha, he tries to clear his ledger by doing better, but he’s not perfect. In fact, he knows it’s all he’s good for (or that’s what he’s convinced himself) and he gets back into being a Winter Soldier for hire of sorts.
-He doesn’t rest til he gets done what needs doing.
-Eventually, he does get a tentative truce going with the Avengers. They’re all more willing to trust him, but he’s very slow to do the same.
-Nat’s death destroys him.
-He doesn’t handle emotion well, and usually works it out via alcohol and sex. Lots of both.
-He very much enjoys sex more than alcohol.
